Freeman Asian Studies Program

INTRODUCTION

The Freeman Foundation has awarded Guilford College's East Asian Studies program
a $1 million, four-year grant for new initiatives that
will enhance the undergraduate curriculum in East Asian Studies
and encourage more students to study about and in East Asia.

Faculty Initiatives

  • Hired a full-time, tenure-track faculty member for East Asian Studies in the Political Science Department
  • Send faculty groups to East Asia in the summers of 2005 and 2006
  • Support faculty and curriculum development related to East Asia
  • Purchase additional library and audio-visual materials on East Asia

Student Initiatives

  • Support student study in East Asia during the academic year
  • Investigate and evaluate additional Asian study-abroad sites
  • Introduce self-instructional Chinese language study
  • Support students to attend East Asian Studies conferences, participate in intensive summer language programs, and/or do internships in East Asia

Community Initiative

  • Asian Arts Festival, Fall 2002-Spring 2006
