Mastering the past to shape the Future!

Sarah Malino
Professor of History

Hometown - Kansas City, Missouri

I joined the Guilford College history faculty in 1979. I earned my B.A. from Wellesly College in 1974, and my M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1974 and 1975 respectively.

Why a career in teaching history?

Deeply influenced by the African-American freedom struggle and the Vietnam War experience, I decided to pursue my postgraduate studies in U.S. History to investigate the "real" more inclusive version of the U.S. past. I was intrigued by the "new" social history, by the stories of African Americans, immigrants, and women who had largely been ignored by the academic historians.

I became the first Columbia University graduate student to present a field in women's history for my Ph.D. oral examinations. My deepest passion is studying and teaching the history of women with special attention to how gender, class, racial, ethnic and regional distinctions have shaped the formation of U.S. culture.

Sarah's Courses

I currently teach courses in U.S. history, U.S. Social and Economic history, the history of women in the U.S., as well as survey, research seminar, and other historical perspectives courses. I approach teaching history using a highly-interactive and interdisciplinary style.
