Pre-Veterinary Program
Admission Requirements
Pre-vet students should plan to major in Biology. However, veterinary schools vary somewhat in their prerequisite courses, so please use the list of courses below as a guideline. Be sure to work closely with a pre-health professions adviser to make sure you are getting the courses you need for the school(s) you plan to apply to.
- Chemistry 111 and 112 (General Chemistry)
- Chemistry 231 and 232 (Organic Chemistry)
- Biology 111 (Integrative Biology: Molecules and Cells)
- Biology 112 (Integrative Biology: Organisms, Ecology and Evolution)
- Biology 313 (Molecular Cell Biology)
- Biology 315 (Microbiology)
- Biology 443 (Genetics)
- Physics 211 and 212 (General Physics)
- Math 112 (Elementary Statistics)
- Math 122 (Calculus I)
- Some schools require a course in Animal Nutrition, which may be taken through the Greater Greensboro Consortium at N.C. A&T State University or as an online course through several universities, including North Carolina State University, Oklahoma State University and Purdue University.
Completing Guilford College’s Foundations and Explorations requirements usually satisfy additional course requirements in English, the humanities and social sciences.
Course Recommendations
Due to the large number of science classes required for admission, pre-veterinary students are strongly encouraged to take Chemistry 111 and 112 and either Biology 111 during their first year of undergraduate study.
Suggested Activities
Veterinary schools require experience in the veterinary field before entering their program. This experience can be gained through internships, volunteer work and summer jobs. Contact Lynn Moseley for help in arranging a veterinary internship for academic credit.
The Standardized Admissions Exam
Most veterinary schools require that all entering students take the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Of the 36 schools that are members of the AAVMC, two require the GRE Biology Subject Test and seven will accept the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) in lieu of the GRE General Test.
Applying to Veterinary School
Most veterinary schools subscribe to the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). Students who wish to apply to veterinary school should complete this common application, which will then be distributed to all the vet schools to which the student plans to apply. The completed application should be submitted by August of the year before the student plans to matriculate in veterinary school.
