an overview of the
health sciences major.

The Health Sciences (HSCI) major is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in any of the health professions. As an interdisciplinary major, the Health Sciences major is a required double major. Therefore, a student must complete a disciplinary major in addition to the Health Sciences major. The major allows students the flexibility to organize into a cohesive course of study the interdisciplinary science courses required for entry into any graduate program in the health professions. Students choose the introductory and advanced courses in the HSCI major from among courses in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Sports Studies and the Social Sciences. In addition, the Health Science Internship and Health Science Seminar act as a capstone to the major, and gives the student an opportunity to gain the real world experience necessary for a career in any health care field.

Courses are selected based on requirements for entry into the graduate program desired. In all tracks, students must take courses from a minimum of two disciplines outside their disciplinary major field. In addition, at least four of the courses must be at the 200 level or above (note: the 200 level science courses in the HSCI major encompass more advanced work, and generally have pre-requisites). A list of approved courses for the health sciences major can be found here.

Health Sciences Tracks Available

The HSCI major includes several tracks designed for students who are interested in entering different health care fields: Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Physician Assistant, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Training.

For each of the following tracks, we have provided:

  1. A list of the usual science, mathematics and social science courses required, at a minimum, for entrance to the graduate program in question. (Note: entrance requirements do vary for different schools, so all students should consult with a health professions advisor to determine the requirements for their specific graduate school. In addition, many graduate programs in the health professions require courses in English, the arts and humanities , so the student should choose her or his Foundations and Explorations requirements carefully, in consultation with their Health Sciences adviser.
  2. Sample programs for different possible double majors. Please note these are SAMPLE programs. The program is highly individual, and depends on the students' goals and interests.
