Literature is my passion. I changed careers to study foreign languages; reading literature (and other works) in the original language enables me to get fully immersed in the work and enhances my understanding of cultures and philosophies different from my own.
I enjoy teaching Guilford students because they have a social conscience. They know what is going on in the world and are not afraid to speak out against policies or actions that they consider wrong or unjust. They have a global awareness that makes it possible to present and discuss complex situations in Latin America. Watching Spanish movies with my students is enlightening; they view the world with fresh eyes and this makes for interesting interpretations and discussions.
At the end of each semester, upper-level Spanish students and I go out to lunch at a restaurant of their choice. I look forward to this activity because everyone is relaxed and we can relate to each other on a more personal level.
When I’m not teaching or reading I love to travel, watch basketball and care for our four-legged child. I have visited Canada, Mexico, most of Europe and 48 states in the United States. Before my career change I worked as a hospital pharmacist for about 14 years…teaching is much more fun.
