Environmental Study, National and International

The ENVS program highly encourages students to explore environmental education opportunities beyond the Guilford College campus. We offer approved four credit courses to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, as well as to Africa on a periodic basis. Ancient Pathways Southwest Semester is an opportunity in Arizona to experience primitive living, learn that traditional lifestyles of native tribes, explore prehistoric rock-art, learn the geology of the grand canyon, and learn how to track animals. Biosphere 2: Columbia University offers semester and summer programs throughout the world in environmental policy, ecology, and astronomy. The semester programs include an earth semester, a universe semester, and a research semester. http://www.columbia.edu/biosphere

School for International Training Study Abroad offers direct field experience in ecology, biodiversity studies, conservation, and sustainable natural resource management, while helping you understand the cultural context of current environmental issues, such as reforestation in Madagascar, species diversity in the Amazon, or coral reef ecology in Australia. The School for Field Studies offers summer and semester environmental field studies opportunities in Kenya, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, and the Turks and Caico Islands. These are intensive opportunities that immerse students in the research. Academic credit is offered through Boston University and Guilford is an affiliate institution. http://www.fieldstudies.org

The University of Hawaii at Manoa has summer programs for academic credit. There are environmentally related classes including classes for biology, civil and environmental engineering, natural resources and environmental management, natural sciences, ocean and resources engineering, and plant and environmental protection sciences. http://www.summer.hawaii.edu

Woods Hole Sea Semester is a study abroad opportunity for students interested in Marine Biology of Oceanography. Students participating in the 12-week SEA Semester or the 8-week SEA Summer Session spend the first half of the program—the Shore Component—at the SEA campus in Woods Hole. The second half of the program—the Sea Component—takes students to the open sea in a vessel that is campus, classroom, and home. http://www.sea.edu
