“Imagining what it is like to be someone other than oneself is at the core of our humanity. It is the essence of compassion, and it is the beginning of morality.”
—Ian McEwan
I teach courses in writing including creative writing, fiction, professional writing, and first-year writing as well as literature and interdisciplinary courses which tend to focus on the fantastic, the monstrous, and the un-reasonable…always those artistic, practical and literary achievements which test limits, expand critical and creative imaginations, and advance the human project—which is, as I see it, to achieve greater understanding, perfect respect, and unconditional acceptance for all of us.
Recent courses include:
-
The Fiction Writing Workshop.
-
An FYE course focusing on Urban Legends and Folklore.
-
A First-Year Writing Class which explores the many voices of American culture using both the HBO series The Wire and a collection of essays about various American myths.
-
A Course on Monsters in literature, film, and theory.
-
A Professional Writing course in which students create actual, living documents for local non-profit agencies.

I am also the faculty advisor for The Greenleaf Review, Guilford College’s literary journal, which publishes both writing and art, hosts the wordquake! reading series, and offers a number of writing contests throughout the year. The Greenleaf is edited and produced in its entirety by Guilford College students and you are invited to be a part of it!
