English Department News

Student Awards - The department selected Amanda Pressley as the winner of the 2008 O'Callaghan award, presented annually to a rising senior who is an outstanding English major. Kathleen Lewis won the outstanding Center for Continuing Education (CCE) English student award.

Gilbert Awards - Ian Michie, Paul Masters, Amanda Oehlert, Kaitlyn Moore, Josh Cohen, Maryam Benganga, Anna Smith, Anna Clarke and Amy Drolet won the 2008 Gilbert senior award, a competitive cash prize that helps graduating seniors make the transition from college to graduate school or career. Ben Dedman, Katie Plyler, Megan Feil, and Lizza Vachon won the Gilbert junior award, a competitive cash prize that funds summer projects for rising seniors.

Faculty Scholarly Activity - Carolyn Beard Whitlow has won a poetry prize and has had her most recent collection of poems published. Vanished was a semi-finalist for the 2005 Crab Orchard Review Prize in Poetry and a finalist for the 2005 Ohio State University Poetry Prize before winning the 2006 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Prize. It has been published by Lotus Press in Detroit.

Jim Hood's essay, "Quakerism's Five Testimonies and International Education," appeared in the inaugural edition of the journal Insights in International Exchange (March 2007). He also made a presentation with Art Department colleague, Maia Dery, entitled "Wild Landscapes:  Exploring Nature and Vocation through Reading, Photography, and Experiential Learning," at the Friends Association for Higher Education conference held in June 2007 at Earlham College. This presentation highlighted two summer courses he has taught with Dery that included backcountry canoeing or backpacking trips: Reading Wilderness (summer 2006) and The American Landscape (summer 2007).

Heather Hayton led a panel titled "The Future of the Past: How to Reclaim the Humanities" at the International Conference on Arts & Humanities Jan. 11-12 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Department members presenting papers were Cynthia Nearman ("Not That Past, the Other One: The Future of Writing and Assessment in Higher Education") and Heather Hayton ("Looking Back and Seeing Ahead: Navigating the Middle Ages After Tolkien").

Doug Smith presented a paper, "Jacob's Wrestling," at the 2006 Association of Writers and Writing Programs Annual Conference in Austin, Texas, in March.
