Independent Studies
Guilford College offers a wealth of opportunities for students to pursue their academic interests beyond the set curriculum. The Business Management department encourages students to expand their business knowledge through an independent study. An independent study calls for intensive work with a faculty member (and, sometimes, more than one faculty member) and can explore a variety of business topics. The timeline for completing the project ranges from 1-2 semesters and 1-4 credits can be earned each semester.
Reasons to pursue an independent study:
To enhance your academic portfolio
To satisfy an unfulfilled curiosity
To undertake a rigorous intellectual and/or artistic challenge
Independent work of this type can take on several titles. An independent study is the most general form of independent work for college credit. This independent project can also culminate into a business management Deparmental Honors project. To receive departmental honors for an independent project, students must discuss the project with the Business Management department chair and set up guidelines for the work. In addition, some business management students complete an independent study as part of their senior honors thesis, a requirement of the Guilford College Honors Program. Students who receive Departmental Honors will be recognized at graduation.
