Maia Dery, Photography

Maia Dery is a nature photographer whose understanding of nature and of photography keeps changing. She still shoots black and white negatives of the landscape in large format and makes prints in a darkroom supplied with rainwater. She also photographs students with a small digital point and shoot. Both subjects are a means of expressing wonder, awe, and gratitude.

She began teaching at Guilford College in August of 2001. On September 11th of 2001, she realized she was there to learn as much as to teach. Thanks to the wonderful community at Guilford, the lessons keep coming.

In addition to teaching in the classroom, Maia is a firm believer in experiential education. In partnership with colleagues from across the disciplines she leads students on visual and intellectual explorations of nature, the landscape, and their roles in the world.

Maia’s academic degrees are a Bachelor of Arts in English from The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies from Duke University. Her first book, An Adventure Guide to the Triangle, was published in 2005 by John F. Blair.
