Admissions requirements for PT schools

Course Recommendations

Biology 111 should be taken during your first year at Guilford.

Suggested Activities

Physical therapy related experience is very important, and direct PT observation is required by many PT schools. Students can gain experience through shadowing physical therapists, internships, summer employment and volunteer work. Both the pre-health professions advisors and the Career Development Center can help students find these experiences.

Standardized Admissions Test

The GRE is the standardized test that all students who wish to apply to PT school must take. The exam should be taken in summer of the year in which you plan to apply. For example, if you planned to enter PT school the fall after you graduate from Guilford, you should take the test before or during the summer of your junior year. Note that some PT schools have a spring (January) start rather than a fall (August) start, so you may need to adjust your timing for taking the GRE.

Applying to PT School

Most PT schools use the online application service PTCAS. Students should complete the common application, which then distributes the information to the students’ chosen schools. The completed application should be submitted by mid-summer of the year before the student plans enter PT school. For example, if you plan to enter PT school the fall after you graduate from Guilford, you should submit the applications during the summer of your junior year. Note that some PT schools have a spring (January) start rather than a fall (August) start, so you may need to adjust your timing for submitting the PTCAS.

Note: As a capstone to the Health Science major, students take Health Science Seminar (HSCI 400), in which students learn about navigating the application process, from preparing the personal statement to interview tips, as well as discuss topics such as paying for graduate school and current issues in health care. In addition, Guilford alumni who are currently in or recently graduated from graduate programs in the health professions come back to share their experiences with you. This class should be taken spring before you plan to apply to PT school.
