Quantitative Literacy Requirement
Rationale: The College has created the Quantitative Literacy Requirement as part of the curriculum for two reasons. First, some minimal level of quantitative literacy is needed to be prepared for life and work in the 21st century. Second, all students will be required to take one or more courses that presume the level of quantitative literacy addressed by the requirement. In addition, satisfying the requirement suggests reasonable preparation for quantitative portions of entrance exams for graduate and professional schools, and for various internship positions.
Fulfilling the Requirement: Students can fulfill this requirement in one of the following ways:
- Scoring a 650 or higher on the Math SAT.
- Passing the Guilford College Quantitative Literacy Test.
- Successfully completing any Guilford College Math course.
- Successfully completing the GST 110 Quantitative Literacy class.
- Receiving transfer credit for any class comparable to a Guilford College Math class.
In rare cases, students with a demonstrated learning difference that make it impossible for them to perform quantitative skills can petition a waiver of the requirement.
Passing the Quantitative Literacy Test
The Quantitative Literacy Test: The test is designed to assess student understanding and use of a variety of mathematical skills. Included in these skills are:
- Using percentages, fractions, and proportions in problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
- Calculating geometric volumes (e.g.,. lengths, areas, volumes).
- Understanding basic probability and statistics.
- Using algebra to solve equations and inequalities.
- Interpreting and displaying numerical data in graphs.
- Working with exponents (e.g., compounding interest).
The use of calculators is permitted in the exam. While the test typically takes 60-75 minutes, it does not have a time limit.
This test is normally offered at regular times throughout the academic year. During both the fall and spring semesters, the test is offered monthly on Saturday afternoons. The test is always offered at least once during the summer session. Check the Test Schedule for specific dates. Students do not need to register for these dates; they merely need to show up with a pencil and a calculator. The test is offered to students participating in the Spring Into Guilford and the Chaos programs as well.
Quantitative Literacy Test Schedule
Test Dates: No registration necessary. The test will be given at 1 p.m. in King Hall, Room 123, on the following dates:
- Saturday, June 6
