Why International Studies at Guilford?
International Studies is a major and a career field that is full of possibilities. Because International Studies at Guilford is a multi-disciplinary major, it can be paired with any other major to create a unique experience and knowledge base for each student. While students focus their International Studies courses, language study, and abroad experience on one geographic region (Africa, East Asia, Europe or Latin America), they explore their other areas of interest in their second major such as Environmental Studies, Political Science, Business, Women’s Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Economics, Biology, Sociology/Anthropology, Art, and many others. There are so many opportunities because a person is able to choose their area of specialization.
Graduates of Guilford’s International studies program live and work in a variety of locations all over the world. The Guilford College Alumni Office estimates that approximately 205 alumni are currently living abroad in 60 different countries. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the major, the abroad experience(s), and the language component, students are able to use their own interests, skills, and abilities to guide their career search. Guilford International Studies majors have found careers in a variety sectors from non-profit organizations to corporations, government, and academia and in fields ranging from human rights to global health, economic development, law, environmental protection, and many others.
International education at Guilford is based upon the traditional Quaker values of tolerance and respect for diversity. Guilford seeks to promote and expand global awareness within the Guilford community and to prepare students to live as citizens and leaders in an increasingly interconnected world.
