Ph.D. Microbiology, emphasis in Genetics, N.C. State University, 1998
B.S. Biology, minor in Teaching, N.C. A&T University, 1993
Postdoctoral research associate with Ron Oppenheim, Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, Wake Forest University School of Medicine
Research Interests
- Developed an undergraduate research program focused on microbial molecular genetics. Maintains a networked program of undergraduate research and research presentation opportunities that have taken students across the state, the country and the world to present at various symposia
- Topics of study include:
- Evolutionary relationships between nitrogen-fixing Azotobacteria and related pseudomonads as determined through rRNA and RNase P phylogenetic analysis, Multi-Locus-Sequence-Typing (MLST), genome structure and metabolic profiling
- Role of riboswitches (RNA structures that control gene expression) on the growth of these organisms, and the virulence of pathogenic relatives
Courses Taught
- BIOL 315: Microbiology
- BIOL 443: Genetics
- BIOL 434: Biochemistry
- BIOL 111: Integrative Biology-Molecules and Cells
Campus and Community Involvement
- Past-President of the North Carolina Branch of the American Society for Microbiology
- President of the North Carolina Academy of Science
