“African American Studies flipped my consciousness and opened my mind to a critical analysis of my experience as a learner. Entering Guilford, I realized there was a world of knowledge excluded in my pre-college curriculum and so my courses of interest lead me to become an African American Studies Major. It was profoundly significant for me to appreciate the whole truth of American history. The courses expanded my philosophical and theoretical understanding of the world by diversifying my knowledge to include the multiple lenses of gender, sexual orientation, class, and race. The professors in the African American Studies department have pushed me to question my position in society and equipped me with the skills necessary to fight for social justice.”
