New & Transfer Undergraduate Students
The starting point for all need-based financial aid is the Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is the only need-based application required by Guilford. You should complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Follow the directions and be sure that ALL required data elements are completed and both student (and parent, if required) PIN numbers are included. The priority deadline for Traditional Campus first time college students is March 1st. Transfer students and new CCE students will be considered for financial aid after this date on a funds available basis.
Traditional Campus new and transfer students are considered for merit assistance at the point of admission. Any merit scholarships for which these students qualify are determined at the time the admission decision is made. Notice of any merit scholarship is included in the letter of admission. This notice informs the recipient of the merit scholarship that has been awarded (if any) and the gpa requirement to retain the scholarship in subsequent years.
All financial aid recipients are required to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). This requirement differs from the gpa requirement to retain eligibility for enrollment in that it has a minimum pass rate for attempted hours. Please familiarize yourself with the full text of the financial aid SAP policy.
It is important also to remember that the majority of books and academic supplies must be purchased during the first few days of the semester. Students cannot rely on work-study earnings for this purpose. You should arrive on campus with sufficient funds to purchase books and other academic supplies required for the start of the semester.
Transfer Students
Guide to Transferring
1. Call to schedule a visit with our Visit Coordinator at 1-800-992-7759. You can tour the campus during weekday and Saturday hours during the academic year. There are no Saturday hours during the summer. During the week, you may be able to meet with the transfer admission counselor, Thayle Jackson Heggie. While on campus, you may also want to discuss financial aid with your counselor. Please let us know if you would like to schedule an appointment with the financial aid department. Appointments with finanical aid are only available Monday through Friday.
2. If you wish, you may send us your application before you visit. When you apply, please arrange for official transcripts to be sent to Guilford College. Also arrange to have Guilford College added to your FAFSA form if you wish to apply for Financial Aid. Our code is 002931.
3. We do NOT grant preliminary transcript evaluations before the application process. If you are interested in finding out how the credits may transfer, please look on our web-site, www.guilford.edu/academics/ at the Course Catalog and general requirements, or inquire when you meet with the transfer counselor.
Transfer Policy
Transfer credit is evaluated on a course by course basis, and credit is granted only for courses with a grade of C- or higher. The credits as well as the course itself will transfer. The grade does not transfer and therefore, the grade point average (GPA) is not affected.
There is no limit to the number of semester hours that may transfer from regionally accredited four-year institutions. A maximum of 64 semester credits from two-year colleges, and up to 48 semester credits from two-year technical colleges may be transferred from institutions that are regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges. Up to 32 credits may be transferred from two-year institutions not so accredited.
To graduate, students must complete a minimum of 32 semester credits at Guilford College and satisfy all degree requirements. A minimum of 128 semester credits is required to graduate, and at least half of the major (16 credits) must be taken at the College.
Students must live on campus unless they are 23 years of age. The application for housing can be found on the web-site, www.guilford.edu/reslife. The application deadline for transferring to Guilford in the Fall is June 1st. For spring, the deadline is December 1st.
Students who are ineligible to return to their institution may be considered for admission to Guilford College after remaining out for a minimum of one year.
