Veterans Benefits
How do I apply for Veterans Benefits?
New or Readmitted students interested in VA benefits should come to the Registrar's Office located in the lower level of New Garden Hall. For more information, please contact the VA Certifying Official at 336-316-2102. To be certified for benefits, applicants must submit the following:
- an official high school transcript or GED (to be official it must received by Guilford in a sealed envelope)
- official transcripts of all colleges attended
- completion of VA 1990 (application), or if you have used VA before, VA form 1995 replaces the VA1990 (not required if you have a "Certificate of Eligibility")*
- copy of DD214 (prior active duty) or NOBE (guard/reserve)
*Only VA determines eligibility for benefits. For students who have never received benefits, submit an online application to the website below.
NO CERTIFICATION CAN BE MADE UNTIL ALL THE ABOVE ARE COMPLETED
Only classes that meet specific requirements for a degree program can be certified for VA benefits. VA will not pay for: any class for which transfer credit was given, any credit/no credit class (Exception: GST 110 Quantitative Literacy), any audited class, repeated courses previously passed, certificates of study. Repeated courses are not coded as repeats until the close of the term. Therefore, at the close of the term, Veteran's Affairs will be notified and benefits must be re-paid if a course is determined to be a repeat unless special approval is granted.
VA bases pay on the number of credit hours per semester and dates of attendance.
Be aware that Fast Track courses affect full-time status. For example, a VA student who registers for one full-term course, one Fast Track I course and one Fast Track II course will NOT be considered a full-time student by the VA. You must register for 12 credits and all courses must be full-term in order to receive the full-time benefit rate for the entire semester.
Training Time for Fall and Spring Semesters:
- 12 credit hours is full-time
- 9-11 credit hours is ¾ time
- 6-8 credit hours is ½ time
- 4-5 credit hours is less than ½ time
- 1-3 credit hours is ¼ time
Training Time for Summer Semester:
- For five-week sessions, 4-6 credit hours are considered full-time
- For the ten-week summer session, 8 credit hours are considered full-time
