Registration Information for Spring 2010
Quality Enhancement Plan: Enhancing Student Writing in the Majors
PREPARE TO REGISTER
Go to Guilford College’s website, www.guilford.edu, scroll to the bottom of the homepage, logon on BannerWeb. Your User ID is your student ID number that begins with a “G”. If you have forgotten your pin number for logging onto BannerWeb you may enter your User ID and click on the Forgot Pin button. If you answer the question correctly, you will be allowed to change your pin and continue logging onto Banner. If the Forgot Pin option is not successful you must contact the IT & S Helpdesk at 316-2525 for help.
View holds with BannerWeb by choosing Student & Financial Aid, Student Records, and View Holds. All holds must be cleared with the appropriate office before you can register for any classes. All students are required to clear a “Guilford College Confirmation” hold by going to www.guilford.edu/verify and following the instructions. It is extremely important that we have the correct expected graduation date coded for you. Please verify/correct the expected graduation date that we have coded for you when going to www.guilford.edu/verify.
Print a Degree Evaluation: Here’s how: go to www.guilford.edu/Registrar and opt “How Do I Run an Online Degree Evaluation?”. Students and advisors use the printout(s) to determine next term’s schedule and track curriculum progress.
To search the Spring 2010 course schedule and identify courses for which to register, either opt to “Look up Classes” in BannerWeb or go to www.guilford.edu, click Academics, Courses, Course Schedules, then Spring 2010.
USEFUL INFORMATION
Message from the Academic Dean’s Office: In response to student wishes, we are posting on the web course syllabi for most departments for most courses scheduled for spring 2010. These syllabi are from previous terms but should provide a good idea of what each course will include. You may access them by going to www.guilford.edu, then clicking Academics, Courses, Course Schedules; choose Spring 2010, then click on the course title and the faculty name next to “Sample Syllabus.”
Consortium registration is not available online. Consortium registration is by pre-approved Consortium Form (available in the Registrar’s Office) on the first day of class at the host institution. Consortium forms require approvals by one’s advisor and the department chair for each course to be taken. See schedules online at host schools’ websites. Registration is subject to space availability after home campus students register. First Year students may not take a Consortium course. See more information at http://www.guilford.edu/academics/catalog/special.html under the Consortium Arrangements section.
Credit/No Credit Grading is an option, if approved, for students for a course that is neither a general education nor major requirement. But credit / no credit grading cannot be arranged online. Rather, an “Election of Credit/No Credit Grading Option” form or a Drop/Add form, with instructor, advisor and student signature must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office before the last day for adding courses. This option is not available for First year students.
Evening Classes: Classes starting at 6pm or later are not available for First Year students. No Exceptions!
Fast Track I & II registration requires that a student (1) complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of approved college work (2) already have fulfilled the English 102 requirement, and (3) be in good academic standing. Fast Track classes are not available to First Year students.
Historical Perspectives courses should be taken immediately after English 102.
Holds must be cleared before you can register for classes. Hold descriptions appear in the BannerWeb Student Records menu (“View Hold”).
Honors Program students only can register online for Honors courses. Students who are not in the Honors Program may enroll in honors courses with instructor permission (Drop/Add form also requires advisor approval.)
Independent Study (260,360,460): Forms are available from the Registrar’s Office. Independent Study forms are completed in consultation with the instructor, and require approval by the chairperson of the instructor’s department and the student’s advisor. First Year students may not take independent study courses. Independent Study cannot fulfill General Education requirements.
Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) 400 courses are restricted to students who have completed a minimum of 88 credits.
Internship (290,390) forms are available at the Contact the Career & Community Learning office, Founders B4A. First year students may not take an Internship. Internships cannot fulfill General Education requirements.
Overload: A typical full-time load is 12 to 18 credits. A petition is required to enroll in 19 or more credits, and extra tuition is billed. Petition Forms are available at the Registrar’s Office and require advisor approval prior to final approval by the Registrar.
Physical Activity credit cannot exceed four (4) hours.
Saturday classes are exclusively for Center for Continuing Education students. No Exceptions.
Seniors graduating next May or July must file a Degree Application online (www.guilford.edu/gradapp). Online registration is blocked for seniors whose applications for graduation are not filed. If appropriate, a graduation date can be changed by contacting the Registrar’s Office (registrar@guilford.edu).
SCHEDULE AN ADVISOR APPOINTMENT
Take your Degree Evaluation to this appointment. See “Prepare to Register” above.
Alternate PINs: Alternate PINs are available only from your advisor and are required for online registration. The alternate PIN is an additional, temporary number; it is not your regular, BannerWeb access PIN number. Alternate PIN numbers change every term.
REGISTER!
After you register online, a screen appears that verifies course registration and/or states reason(s) for denied enrollment in certain courses.
(Once registered, you are officially enrolled at Guilford and financially responsible for charges. If you decide not to attend classes, you must notify one of the appropriate offices (See the section on “If you do not plan to enroll Spring 2010” below in order to withdraw officially.)
The online registration period has been extended to the day before Reading Day, Thursday, December 10. After Thursday, December 10, Alternate Pin Numbers will be reset. To make changes to your registration, online, after December 10, you meet with your advisor, discuss registration changes, and secure a new Alternate Pin Number. This new Alternate Pin Number will allow you to register and/or make changes to your registration on-line until the first day of classes, Monday, January 11. After Sunday, January 10, all registration changes will be done by completing a drop/add form.
