IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION.

Message from the Academic Dean’s Office:   In response to student wishes and as discussed in recent division meetings, we are posting on the web course syllabi for most departments for most courses scheduled for spring 2009. These syllabi are from previous terms but should provide a good idea of what each course will include.  You may access them by going to www.guilford.edu, then clicking Academics, Courses, Course Schedules; choose Spring 2009, then click on the course title and the faculty name next to “Sample Syllabus”.

Consortium registration is not available online.  Consortium registration is by pre-approved Consortium Form (available in the Registrar’s Office) on the first day of class at the host institution.  Consortium forms require approvals by one’s advisor and the department chair for each course to be taken.  See schedules online at host schools’ websites.  Registration is subject to space availability after home campus students register.  First year students may not take a Consortium course.

Credit/No Credit Grading is an option, if approved, for students for a course that is neither a general education nor major requirement.  But credit / no credit grading cannot be arranged online.  Rather, an “Election of Credit/No Credit Grading Option” form or a Drop/Add form, with instructor, advisor and student signature must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office before the last day for adding courses.  This option is not available for First year students.

Evening Classes:  Classes starting at 6pm or later are not available for first year students.

Fast Track I & II registration requires that a student (1) complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of approved college work (2) already have fulfilled the English 102 requirement, and (3) be in good academic standing.  Fast Track classes are not available to First year students.

Historical Perspectives courses should be taken immediately after English 102.

Holds:  The online system blocks registration when a “hold” is linked to a student account.   Hold descriptions appear in the BannerWeb Student Records menu (“View Hold”).  Examples include accounts holds for fees due, pending judicial matters, and academic standing, and pending degree applications.

Honors:  Only Honors Program students can register online for Honors courses. Students who are not in the Honors Program may enroll in honors courses with instructor permission (Drop/Add form also requires advisor approval.)

Independent Study (260,360,460):  Forms are available from the Registrar’s Office.  Independent Study forms are completed in   consultation with the instructor, and require approval by the chairperson of the instructor’s department and the student’s advisor.        First year students cannot take independent study courses. Independent study credit cannot apply to general education requirements.

Internship (290,390):   Contact the Career & Community Learning office, Founders B4A.  First year students may not take an   Internship. Internship credit cannot apply to general education requirements.

Overload:  A typical full-time load is 12 to 18 credits.  A petition is required to enroll in 19 or more credits, and extra tuition is billed.  Petition Forms are available at the Registrar’s Office and require advisor approval prior to final approval by the Registrar.

Saturday classes are exclusively for Center for Continuing Education students. No Exceptions.

Seniors graduating next May and July must file a Degree Application online (www.guilford.edu/gradapp).  Online registration is blocked for seniors whose applications for graduation are not filed.   If appropriate, a graduation date can be changed by contacting the Registrar’s Office (registrar@guilford.edu).

SCHEDULE CHANGES:  Remind students that course changes (Drop/Adds) need to be made during their window of time for Web registration. After a student’s window for Web registration is closed, all registrations and schedule changes must be completed by bringing an appropriately signed Registration Form or Drop/Add slip to the Registrar’s Office.  For CCE students they can submit their forms to the CCE office in Hendricks Hall after 5:00pm.  If a course is closed, the student goes to the instructor with an Add slip to ask for his/her signature. Advisor signatures are required on all Drop/Add forms

Please check off (√) student names as registrations are completed and contact all advisees failing to register.  If you learn that students are planning to withdraw from school, determine whether we can assist them in remaining at Guilford College.  If they need assistance in sorting through issues, refer Traditional students to Campus Life (2nd floor Founders) and Continuing Education students to the CCE office(ext. 2179).

We want to register all current students.  If this is impossible, please send the names of non-returning students to Campus Life (or CCE students to the CCE office (ext. 2179)) with their reasons for not registering.  Traditional students withdrawing at the end of this term should process a formal withdrawal through the Campus Life Office (refer CCE students to the CCE office (ext. 2179).

Your continued interest and work with our students will hopefully assist them in remaining at Guilford for the duration of their undergraduate studies.
