Expectations/Requirements

First Year Students

  • Within the first month of the program develop an idea of a focus within Quakerism, e.g., peace and justice, mysticism, education, evangelism, etc.
  • By the end of the first semester turn in some form of expression of your thoughts and ideas on your focus. This may take the form of a poem, music, drawing, essay, dialogue, or other expression. Add to it or do something different for the second semester.
  • Attend speakers/conferences/programs that coincide with the area of interest.
  • Do 3-6 write-ups per semester on a speaker or program that relates to your area of focus.
  • Follow other QLSP guidelines such as attending potlucks, worship services, grade level meetings, serving on committees and hearing speakers and visitors outside of your focus area.
  • Express a plan in writing to the QLSP director concerning what you want to do next year.
  • Summer related work counts and should be added to portfolio upon return.

Second Year Students

  • Develop a spiritual component to your concentration in conjunction with the Spiritual Formation year of QLSP; express this in some manner by the end of each semester.
  • Use your spiritual friend as a means of bouncing off ideas and concerns about your focus.
  • Read a book related to your focus and write on it, or create music, draw, etc. as a reflection of the work you have done.
  • Attend speakers/conference/programs that coincide with your focus.
  • Do 3-6 write-ups per semester on speakers and programs that relate to your focus.
  • Follow other QLSP guidelines
  • Express a plan in writing to the QLSP director concerning what you want to do next year.
  • Summer related work counts and should be added to portfolio upon return.

Third Year Students

  • Create a Third Year Conference that is meaningful to everyone in the group.
  • Intern with something, someone that relates to your area of focus.
  • Keep a journal on the internship and share it at least twice during the semester with the QLSP director.
  • Attend speakers and visitors to campus that relate and some that very much do not relate or interest you.
  • Follow other QLSP guidelines.
  • Express a plan in writing to the QLSP director concerning what you want to do next year.
  • Summer related work counts and should be added to portfolio upon return
  • Study Abroad Students-don't forget about your portfolio, keep mementos to add to the portfolio upon return

Fourth Year Students

  • At the end of the year be able to present in some public way your portfolio.
  • Keep working on it throughout the year.
  • Use it to help others recommend you for jobs, internships, etc.
  • Attend speakers and visitors to campus that relate to your focus and write up 3-6 responses each semester.
  • Follow other QLSP guidelines.
  • Keep portfolio

Goals:

  • To make this program meaningful to the individual so that s/he is invested in it, creating a better sense of community.
  • To create something that is representative of ones experience in the program.
  • To help foster a sense of greater fidelity to the program.
  • To step away from the "conventional" and do something "new."
  • To have something tangible.
  • To have fun.
  • To deepen the level of spirituality and personal exploration.

What if…

You change focus...

  • Feel free to do so! You will probably change your college major a few times, too! In consultation with the QLSP director, be sure to fulfill the expectations of the portfolio.

You hate this idea...

  • Talk with the QLSP director and find a way that makes it work for you within the basic framework.
  • Give it a chance.
