The Multicultural Leadership Scholars Program (MLSP) will further the college's goal to create an anti-racist, multicultural campus community by strengthening our ability to recruit, retain, educate, and graduate a diverse student body. The MLSP will work with the Multicultural Staff Team to create a campus ethic of inclusion that fosters communication across the divides that continue to separate us, including: race, culture, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender, religion and learning differences.
Ten Multicultural Leadership Scholars will be selected to serve for the new academic year. Upcoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply. Traditional and CCE students may apply. Applicants will be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to anti-racist, multi-cultural issues; ability to initiate and complete projects; and willingness to develop leadership skills and work as a team. The award is for one academic year only, but MLS are eligible to re-apply. Bonner Scholars are not eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.
Multicultural Leadership Scholars will work 150 hours each semester in a programming area of Multicultural Education such as anti-racism, developing cross-cultural skills, and heterosexism, or with affinity groups of African American, Asian, Latino, Native American, European American, International, GLBT, or students with Learning Differences. Students will enroll in a four-credit Multicultural Leadership Seminar. All scholars will complete Anti-racism Training and Safe Zone or Heterosexism Training (addresses GLBT issues). Training will continue during the academic year as needs are identified through work with the Multicultural Staff Team.
Each Multicultural Leadership Scholar will receive a financial award of $3,000 for traditional students and $1,500 for CCE students. One-half of the financial award will be applied to the scholar's tuition, room and board fees at the beginning of each semester. Scholars must successfully fulfill the responsibilities of the program during the first semester in order to receive the award for the second semester.
