Africana Community Program

The Africana Community Program provides leadership in the development, coordination, and delivery of social, cultural, and educational programs and activities intended to support students of African descent and promote the education of the entire Guilford College on issues of diversity and equality. Some of its programming areas/ activities are:

  • Mentoring; Orientation; Participation in student leadership conferences; Collaboration with African American Studies and African Studies Departments; Collaboration with the Black Alumni Association; Coordination of the Martin Luther King Jr. campus commemorations; Collaboration with the Guilford College Anti-racism Team; Coordination of Journey into Blackness; Coordination of Brown Bag Discussions; Advising and coordination of Blacks Unifying Society (B.U.S.).
  • All students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to attend the events and programs.

The Production is comprised of spoken word poetry, dance, live music and theater. "Passage" will paint a vivid picture with words and music that is sure to open your eyes and awaken the senses.

Hip Hop is an American Reality Brown Discussion & Break Dance Demonstration/ Lesson

Chelii Broussard of Winston Salem State University

Broussard will discuss the historical perspective of Hip Hop as it relates to present day issues.  She also expounds upon the elements, culture, and evolution of Hip Hop. There will also be a teach Break Dancing lesson afterward.

The Element

The Element is a 5-month-series in which each month participants will compete for their respective titles. A winner and a runner-up will be chosen to compete for a$500 cash valued prize, incentive package** and the title as “The Element ”.

The opening for the Element is the Networking Extravaganza.

MLK Activism: Then & Now Vigil

Guilford celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events entitled “Activism: Then and Now” beginning Jan. 12 2009.

Programs—all were free and open to the public— honored and examined the work of the late civil rights leader and explored how current activists continue his legacy. The series culminated with a community forum connecting stories and experiences of past and present activists.
