Africana Community Program

 

The Africana Community Program provides leadership in the development, coordination, and delivery of social, cultural, and education programs and activities intended to support students of African descent and promote the education of the entire Guilford College on issues of diversity and equality. Some of its programming areas/activities are:

  • Mentoring;
  • Orientation;
  • Participation in student leadership conferences;
  • Collaboration with African American Studies and African Studies Departments;
  • Collaboration with the Black Alumni Association;
  • Coordination of the Martin Luther King Jr. campus commemorations;
  • Collaboration with the Guilford College Anti-racism Team;
  • Coordination of Journey into Blackness;
  • Advising and coordination of Blacks Unifying Society (B.U.S.);among others.

 

Blacks Unifying Society (B.U.S)

Mission Statement

  • BUS is a student led organization whose purpose is to offer unity amongst Black students of African descent while fostering and encouraging participation in the academic, social and political life of Guilford College and the community at large.
  • BUS seeks to create and maintain a safe space.
  • BUS is accountable to the collective of Black students and represents a united voice.
  • BUS serves as an organizing entity and promotes Black solidarity.
  • BUS serves as an academic and scholarly entity that preserves and reinforces a historical perspective and analysis of Black experience.
  • BUS is committed to academic excellence.
  • BUS proactively organizes its efforts to maintain accountability from the college and greater community.
  • BUS recognizes that we are a product of the collective experience, struggle, achievements set by our predecessors (BASIB and AACS) and we honor, acknowledge, and affirm their contributions. BUS will nurture, challenge, and develop progressive Black leadership for a strong and unified community.

Blacks Unifying Society (BUS) Previously, the African American Cultural Society (AACS), BUS was organized by the Guilford African American student community to foster unity among African American students while encouraging full participation in the academic, social, and policy-making processes of the college community. BUS is open to all members of the Guilford College community as it strives to sponsor projects and cultural activities that foster greater awareness of the African American experience in the United States and abroad
