Circulation/Access Services patrons can borrow books, reserve materials, wireless laptops, headphones, CDs, DVDs, videos, audiocassettes, LPs and other items. Reserve materials, laptops, and headphones are for use in the library only, with a three-hour limit.
Checking out Materials
After locating an item through the Online Catalog, write down the call number and any special location information (e.g. Quaker or Reference) or restrictions (e.g. non-circulating). Non-circulating materials include the reference collection, periodicals, rare books, microfilm, and microfiche. Go to the corresponding floor to find the materials. You will be asked to present your Guilford ID or qualifying borrower's card upon checkout.
Reserve Items
Professors will occasionally place items on Reserve. Reserve items can be checked out for 3 hours for library use only. Reserve items may have a status of Overnight use. Overnight reserves are available throughout the day for library use only. They can be checked out overnight after 10:30 p.m. or 1 hour before closing (whichever comes first). Overnight reserves are due 1 hour after the library opens on the following day.
Consortium Borrowing
Guilford College is part of a consortium with Greensboro College, Salem College and Bennett College. Patrons can request up to 15 titles at one time. The borrowing period for Consortium loans is 30 days. One renewal may be granted as long as the item has not been placed on hold for another patron.
To request an item through the Consortium, go to the NC-PALS Online Catalog. Search for an author, title, subject, or keyword. The holdings screen will indicate where the item is located. If Guilford College does not own the item and a copy is shown as available at another institution, click on "Place a Request" (located above the title). At the prompt for User ID, enter the bottom number on your Guilford ID Card that starts with "22..". The first time you place a request, you will need to set up your account with a password and alternate ID. Initially, you will need to use the password "changeme". To set up your own secure password, click into My Account and look for the Change your password link. Make note of this new password as you will need this anytime you wish to place a request or access my account in the online catalog.
Select Guilford College as the location you want the item shipped to. Materials through the Consortium usually arrive within 3 to 5 days. Circulation/Access Services receives the materials and contacts the patron. The patron can then pick up the requested item.
Cooperative Lending
Hege Library also has a cooperative lending agreement with N.C. A&T and UNCG. To borrow materials from those libraries, a permission slip is needed from Circulation/Access Services.
