Reference Stacks
Books in the Reference section are located on the main level just before the general collection. Reference books are also arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. These books are for use in the library only and cannot be checked out.

Quick Reference
The Quick Reference section, located on the shelves behind the Reference Desk, includes several almanacs and frequently used sources like Statistical Abstracts and various writing guides. Other resources featured here provide excellent references to other research materials.
Public Access Terminals
Located next to the Reference Desk are two public access terminals, with which patrons can get access to the online catalog and other internet resources. (Printing is not enabled.) There is also a Macintosh computer with a flatbed scanner located near the globe.

Information Village
Access to NC-PALS Online Catalog, Electronic Databases, and other online resources.
General Encyclopedias and Literary Reference Series
Located next to the Information Village computers, the literary works are designed to provide users with substantial critical excerpts and biographical information on the world's most frequently discussed and studied writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The general encyclopedias are housed here and specialized encyclopdias are integrated within the reference collection.
Periodical Indexes and Abstracts
Located next to the Information/Reference Desk and arranged alphabetically by title, the indexes and abstracts provide a citation or summary of a scholarly journal, magazine, or newspaper article. Consult the Periodical Holdings of the Hege Library booklet or search by periodical title or by main entry title in the NC-PALS Online Catalog to determine if the library subscribes to the magazine or journal. Journal Finder, which is accessible through the library's homepage, can be searched by title to find periodicals in all formats. The Library of Congress Subject Headings volumes are located on the first index shelf near the public access terminals.
