Quaker Open Stacks

Quaker Stacks (Room 117)
Located across from the Carnegie room on main level

The Quaker Stacks are located on the main level and available whenever the library is open. Most items listing "Quaker" with their call numbers are in this area. Specific titles can be found using the library's online catalog. Quakers have traditionally been involved in a number of historical movements and social justice issues so a variety of topics, not just Quakerism, can be researched in this area. Publications about Quaker history, thought, and belief are among the books and periodicals located in the Quaker Stacks. College yearbooks and Guilfordians, as well as other college publications, are located immediately to your right as you enter the room. Most of our books can be checked out with a Guilford ID, but some publications (especially sets and college publications) are limited to use within the library and can be consulted anytime the library is open.

NOTE:  Quaker Periodicals formerly in Room 117 are now available in Room 120. Periodicals on microfilm are still available in Room 117. See notebooks in either room for a full list of Friends Historical Collection Periodicals.

A microfilm reader/printer and Internet terminal for searching the catalog are also available for general use in the Quaker Stacks.

Friends Historical Research Room Friends Historical Research Room (Room 116)
Located beside the Quaker Stacks

The Friends Historical Research Room is open on Tuesday - Friday from 9 a.m.-noon and from 2-5 p.m. This room houses the Quaker Reference books that are primarily used by people studying local and Quaker family history. Individuals needing to access materials that are kept in the closed stacks also use the Research Room. Researchers coming from off campus to do research are strongly encouraged to e-mail archives@guilford.edu in advance to make sure materials will be available. Students are also encouraged to make an appointment for research assistance if they are interested learning more about using archival and manuscript sources. Special arrangments can sometimes be made to provide access to specific sources outside of the limited Research Room hours.

Peace Studies Reading RoomQuaker Periodicals Reading Room (Room 120)

Located on the Main Floor in the Friends Historical Collection, the Quaker Periodicals Reading Room contains periodicals by Quaker organizations and publishers. Titles and holding information are included for some, but not all, in the NC-PALS Catalog. Complete lists are provided in "Periodicals Holdings of the Hege Library" which is available in this room and the Carnegie Room. All items are for library use only and can be consulted whenever the library is open. The space is also available as a study area for individuals or small groups.

Staff access only

Closed stack materials are only available during Research Room hours or by special arrangement since a librarian must retrieve them. Rare books, college theses, manuscript collections, and college archives are among the special items kept in this area. Rare books and theses written after 1989 are listed in the NC-PALS Catalog. Additional information about manuscript collections and college archives is available in the Research Room and at www.guilford.edu/fhc. Individuals are requested to make advance arrangements whenever possible so that materials can be retrieved and made available for study in the Research Room.
