Full Job Description
BASIC FUNCTION: Reporting to the Library Director, the Information Literacy Librarian manages the information literacy program and serves as the primary instructor. The Information Literacy Librarian will work with instructional faculty and other academic departments to design, promote, publicize, implement, and assess programs, services, and events related to information literacy, including programs for first year students. With the support of other professional librarians, s/he schedules, coordinates, and facilitates library-related instruction and outreach, including programming for faculty development and classroom instruction for students.. As a member of the Library’s Public Services team, s/he provides additional support for reference services (when needed) and participates in the Library’s collection development activities. S/he is expected to keep up with and contribute actively to the profession and to participate in professional organizations. S/he has the same responsibilities for governance and community service as a teaching member of the faculty.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develops, coordinates, implements, publicizes, and assesses the information literacy curriculum for the College, working with the Library Director and in consultation with the Faculty Educational Policy Committee, the QEP committee, and other professional librarians.
• Schedules, coordinates, and teaches library instruction sessions for students, including library orientation and bibliographic instruction sessions.
• Coordinates outreach to faculty, including development of a Faculty Fellows Program, working with the Library Director and other professional librarians.
• Develops library-related instructional materials, using traditional and emerging technology for information literacy; develops online tools, including but not limited to, online bibliographies, tutorials, guides and online learning objects.
• Design and management of all elements of the library’s web page.
• Evaluates use of emerging information literacy techniques that could strengthen library instruction.
• Provides additional reference support as needed, in collaboration with the Head of Reference, including in-person, phone, and email reference assistance in the use of print and electronic library resources to a diverse user population. Provides individual appointments and consultations to students and faculty, including support of students undertaking thesis projects.
• Participates in collection development and management activities through serving as a liaison to assigned academic divisions or departments; selects and manages library materials in assigned areas; and serves on the Collection Development Policy Committee.
• Contributes to the collegial operation of the Library as a member of the Library Management Team, Public Services Team, and the general Library staff.
• Contributes actively to the profession through professional development workshops and conferences, research writing, public presentations and participation in professional organizations.
• Serves the College community through participation in faculty meetings, committees, and other ways compatible with the professional responsibilities of the position.
EDUCATION, SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s in Library Science or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year of reference/library instruction experience in an academic library required. Strong commitment to public service, Familiarity with concepts and goals of information literacy, and experience using web-authoring tools, including elements of design and usability.
