Quaker Books

The Quaker open stacks (Room 117) are available whenever the library is open. Specific titles can be located using the library's on-line catalog. Most items listing "Quaker" in the call number are located in the Quaker open stacks. Quakers have traditionally been involved in a number of historical movements and social justice issues so a variety of topics, not just Quakerism, can be researched in this area. A complete set of Guilford College yearbooks and newspapers are kept along the wall immediately to your right as you enter Library 117.

Many of our books can be checked out at the main circulation desk with a Guilford College ID. Most sets of publications and some older titles and second copies cannot leave the library (a library use only stamp at the front of the book indicates when this is the case). All can be consulted anytime the library is open.

Quaker Periodicals

Quaker periodicals are found on the magazine display and shelved in alphabetical order around the perimeter of the Quaker Periodicals Reading Room (Room 120). Some periodicals are on microfilm which is kept in the cabinet in Room 117. See the Hege Library Periodicals Holdings List (available in notebooks located around the library) for complete information about Quaker periodicals holdings and formats. Some Quaker periodicals can also be located through the NC-PALS on-line catalog and Journal Finder. However, cataloging is incomplete, so the in-house Holdings List remains the more comprehensive listing.

Rare Books

Rare books are listed in the NC-PALS online catalog. Both Quaker and Main Collection Rare Books are kept in the Friends Historical Collection and do not leave the library. They are only available during Research Room hours (Tues.– Fri., 9 – noon and 2 – 5) or by special arrangement.

College Archives

The Guilfordian (1914-present), yearbooks, and several other college publications are available anytime in Library 117 along the wall immediately to your right as you enter the room. College theses written since 1989 are included in the NC-PALS catalog. All theses are kept with rare books and limited to library use only. The paper card catalog in Library 117 provides a list of pre-1989 theses and also includes a name index to the college’s alumni journal.

The Guilford College Archives hold the records of the institution since its’ founding as the New Garden Boarding School in 1837. The archives include course catalogs, student handbooks, minutes of the Board of Trustees, faculty meeting and various faculty committees, records of individual departments, and minutes and memorabilia from various student organizations. These materials are available to students and faculty by appointment in the Research Room or through other special arrangements. Photographs documenting the college history can be found in publications such as the yearbook and the campus newspaper. Unpublished photographs of campus events, students and faculty, and campus buildings are filed in the Guilford College photo files and available by appointment.
