Spam/Virus Filtering Routing Issues
The spam/virus firewall that processes all messages coming into the campus from outside providers encountered excessive traffic and delays in delivering mail on Monday, March 24th, 2008. The problem intensified on Tuesday and steps were taken with the vendor to correct the issue. IT&S believes it has solved the problem, and has implemented a secondary spam/firewall to help offload some of the daily traffic.
You may have received a high volume of email overnight on Tuesday evening. This was due to the spam/virus firewall processing a backlog of email (19,000 messages.) As of 9 AM on Wednesday, the backlog had been processed.
You may have also received older mail that was resent in error over night Tuesday. This was done in error when attempting to clear the backlog of messages. That should not occur again.
You may now begin to receive duplicate emails of the same message. Please either remove both if spam, or one if valid. We expect this to be an occassional issue, due to the fixes we have implemented.
