Fall Cleaning -- Clean Up Your Share Space
IT&S recommends that you only keep files in your share space (H: drive) that are essential for business or academic work. Students should keep their share space usage to 100 MB or below. If you have files on your share space that are not essential, this is the perfect time to clean up!
The easiest way to connect to your share space is to log into a campus computer running using your Guilford username and password. Your share space will then be mapped to your computer as your H: drive.
To get to your H: drive:
1 Go to the Start Menu and click on My Computer.
2 In My Computer, double-click on the network drive labeled "H:" It will be labeled with your username and tell you what server it is on (athena, hobbs, or students.) If you don't see your H drive, it will need to be mapped. Click here for help with connecting to your network drive, or call the Help Desk at 336-316-2110 for assistance.
Once you've opened your H drive, you can see what files are saved in there, and remove files that are not essential for business or academic work.
There are system files that you should not delete. Be careful not to delete the following:
- The folder named Profile, which you need to log in to campus computers
- The file called <yourusername>.id, which you need for your campus email
- The folder called Notes, which you need for your campus email if you use a Guilford College Windows desktop
If you are not sure if you should delete a file, please contact the Help Desk at 336-316-2525, help@guilford.edu, or in person in Bauman 101 for assistance.
If you need to keep non-essential files, we suggest moving the files to a USB key or burning them to a CD or DVD. Click here for instructions on how to burn a CD on a Windows computer. CDs and DVDs are also available for purchase from the Help Desk in Bauman 101.
To sort your H drive to find the files taking up the most space, you can sort the files on your share space by size. To sort by size, go to View --> Arrange Icons By --> Size to sort the files by size.
If you need assistance with cleaning up your share space, please contact the Help Desk at 336-316-2525, help@guilford.edu, or in person in Bauman 101.
