2002 NSSE: Active and Collaborative Learning

Results of Active and Collaborative LearningOne of NSSE's benchmarks of effective educational practice is Active and Collaborative Learning. The idea behind this benchmark is that "students learn more when they...are asked to think about and apply what they are learning in different settings," in part when they "collaborat[e] with others in solving problems."

Seven questions from the survey were used to develop this benchmark. Click on any of the questions to see Guilford's results in a new window.

How often did they ask questions in class or contribute to class discussions? How often did they make a presentation in class?
How often did they work with other students on projects during class? How often did they work with classmates outside of class to prepare class assignments?
How often did they tutor or teach other students? How often did they participate in a community-based project as part of a regular course?
How often did they discuss ideas from their readings or classes outside of class?
