Campus Master Planning

After more than a year of community meetings, interviews and forums with students, faculty and staff, alumni and other constituents, the campus master plan was approved in principle by the Board of Trustees at its meeting June 3, 2006.
Trustees approved the overall scope and direction of the master plan for 2006-2016, including use of the quad, recommended buildings for the academic program and residential life, placement of athletic fields, parking and costs. The scope and siting of the new buildings will be approved by the board in future years when funds have been identified.
Capital improvements costing $19 million are included in Phase I of the master plan, with an additional $15.85 million in Phase II. All projects will be funded by private gifts to the college.
Van Yahres Associates of Charlottesville, Va., was retained to develop the master plan. Members of the Strategic and Long-range Planning Committee were the principal representatives of the campus in the master planning process.
The master planning process began in April 2005 with a kick off meeting and the first round of open forums and interviews to gather information on space needs and get campus community input on building, grounds and space. Van Yahres compiled the minutes from the first and second round of interviews and open forums.
A second round of community meetings with faculty, staff, students and trustees in September 2005 helped Van Yahres establish strong ideas to build a draft of the campus master plan.
A draft of the campus master plan was reviewed and discussed in community meetings and at the February 2006 trustee meeting. Additional feedback was solicited leading up to review and approval by the board in June.
Here is the final copy of the campus master plan, which includes the Phase I & II maps. President Chabotar's April 2006 PowerPoint presentation (in PDF format), which addresses feedback received on sustainability, can be reviewed as well.
