Kent Chabotar, Guilford's President, and Earl the Squirrel, the environmental sustainability mascot, discuss the finer points of recycling number two plastics at Earth Day 2007

The American College and University President's Climate Commitment is a nationwide document that Kent Chabotar signed in the spring of 2007 committing Guilford College to a carbon neutral future. To date 604 other colleges and universities have pledged along side of Guilford. The basic idea: figure out where your carbon is coming from, write a plan outlining how to eliminate or drastically reduce said carbon, then turn the plan into reality. Sounds good doesn’t it. You in?

Greenhouse Gas Inventory: The Greenhouse Gas Inventory is an inventory of Guilford's yearly greenhouse gas emissions using Clean Air, Cool Planet Carbon Calculator. A committee of students, faculty, and staff measured emission sources based on the number required for the calculator (including electricity consumption in KWh, staff and faculty commuting in mileage and gas usage, and diesel fuel consumption). Guilford will re-measure its greenhouse gas emissions every two years, but currently the largest source of emissions is Guilford's electricity usage. Action Plan: The action plan is currently being developed by the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator and other facilities staff for board approval. To look at the first draft, click here.
