Swine Flu Information

Guilford College is aware of the Health Advisory posted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

What is swine flu?

According to the CDC, Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classic swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

Services Offered

The staff in the Student Health Center is interested in helping you attain and maintain a healthy approach to college life.  It is our objective to view each student as a whole person, with objectivity, confidentiality, and concern in meeting their health care needs.

The center is staffed by a full-time registered nurse and a part-time physician assistant (9 hours per week).

All of your health care needs can be assessed at the Student Health Center. Most of your concerns and illnesses also can be treated through the center. If off-campus referral is needed, the staff will assist you in planning and implementing a consultation.

The student health staff is available for acute and chronic illness evaluation, consultation for positive health strategies, identification of health risks, contraceptive counseling, referrals to counseling centers and referrals off campus for specialty care (e.g. dentist, ophthalmologist, surgeon, etc.). Inpatient care is not available in the Student Health Center. If hospitalization is needed, it will be arranged through local medical facilities.

Allergy injections can be given in the Student Health Center. You must provide your serum, needles, epi-pen and complete written instructions from the prescribing physician, and a telephone number to call if there are any questions regarding your allergy therapy. All students are required to remain in the Student Health Center for 20--30 minutes after each injection.

Take time during your first week on campus to inform the student health staff of your ongoing medical concerns (e.g. allergy medications, asthma, convulsive disorder, diabetes, hypertension, etc.).

All medical records and services received in the health center are confidential.  Information is not released without the student's written permission.  Students are encouraged to notify their parents of illness or injury.  Parents are notified by the college only in the event of serious illness or injury or with the student's permission.

Class attendance is a matter between the student and the instructor.  With permission of the student, the staff will verify knowledge of the student's illness and/or visit to the health center.  The instructor retains the authority to excuse or not excuse the absence from class.

Health Records

Completion of the immunization form is mandatory. Your physician, P.A., N.P. or Health Department must complete the form.  It should be received in the health center by May 31. In compliance with North Carolina Immunization Law (G.S. 130-A-155), a student who does not provide proof of immunizations will be suspended 30 days after classes begin.

Charges

Routine assessment in the Student Health Center is free of charge. If lab tests (e.g. throat culture, blood work, pap smear) are necessary, the charges will be directly billed to the student's college account by the outside laboratory performing the tests. If x-ray is necessary, the staff will order the required test and instruct the student as needed. When prescription medication is indicated for treatment, the staff will help the student in choosing a local pharmacy to fill the prescription. Fees for x-ray and off-campus medication are the student's responsibility
