Expectations of Student Interns
PREVIOUS TERM
- Identify a potential Faculty Sponsor. This is a faculty member within the department where credit for the internship is desired. Contact the faculty member to determine whether s/he can assist with internship oversight and schedule time to meet.
- Meet with your Faculty Sponsor to discuss the type and purpose of the internship. Discuss possibilities for suitable internship sites.
- Schedule an appointment to meet for further assistance in identifying potential sites. Visit Career & Community Learning Center on-line (found under Student link: "internship opportunities") or in person for additional resources or information.
- Meet with a Career Counselor in Career & Community Learning (CACL) to create, update and polish your resume and cover letters.
- With input from your Faculty Sponsor, prepare the internship proposal form and internship plan, especially the areas which clarify the learning objectives, set regular meeting times, and establish criteria for evaluation of the internship experience. Agree on the types of writing involved (standard documentation of learning includes a weekly journal and a final evaluation paper, although a midterm evaluation paper may be substituted for the journal).
WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE LAST DAY TO ADD A COURSE
- Submit the following to the Coordinator of Internships/IFP Liaison: Internship Proposal Form (will not be accepted without all required signatures), Internship Plan (typed separately, all questions must be answered, and it must be signed by the Faculty Sponsor), and the Guilford College Internship Agreement (Non-Paid) is required only if the internship is non-paid.

THROUGHOUT THE TERM
- Do a great job! Dress appropriately, show up on time, seek out additional assignments that challenge and teach you, ask questions, and contribute to the team.
- Meet regularly (every other week is recommended) with your Faculty Sponsor to discuss learning occurring in the internship and to engage in reflection on the process. Email and/or telephone contact is permissible in the event of remote site internships.
- Submit journal entries on a weekly basis by email or in person.
PRIOR TO MID-TERM
- Schedule a meeting with your Faculty Sponsor to review the internship discuss the internship experience to date and to go over final paper proposals/outline for a 390-level internship.
THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO END OF TERM
- Give the Site Supervisor the "Site Supervisor's Final Evaluation of Student" form and request that it be completed and returned to the Internship Coordinator by the last week of classes.
END OF TERM
- Complete and submit the "Intern's Final Evaluation of Internship" form to the Internship Coordinator by the last week of classes.
- Check with Site Supervisor to ensure that his/her final evaluation has been completed and sent in.
- Mail a thank you note to your Site Supervisor and submit a copy to the Internship Coordinator by the last week of classes.
- Submit your written work to your Faculty Sponsor in order to receive a final grade.
