Each semester between 60 and 90 Guilford College students receive academic credit for their work in the community. Guilford College is grateful for the community's extensive participation in our internship program. This program as being mutually beneficial to the student, the college and the internship site.
Students receive credit for utilizing an alternative learning environment to attain specific educational goals. Credit is granted as follows:
-
1 credit: 36 hours of work on site
-
2 credits: 72 hours of work on site
-
3 credits: 108 hours of work on site
-
4 credits: 144 hours of work on site
Along with fulfilling the above requirements, each student works in consultation with a faculty member throughout the internship to connect learning outside of the classroom to certain disciplines. This includes writing papers and maintaining a journal. The site supervisor is asked to complete an evaluation of each student intern at the conclusion of the internship.
Guilford students have found internships to be valuable in several ways including: experiencing profound learning by linking academics and action; pursuing a new area of interest; exploring potential career fields; building experience in a chosen field; and building self-confidence through personal challenge.
