Teen Families Reading and Learning
Our Mission:
To support teen mothers and their academic needs, career planning exploration, and engagement with their children in family literacy.
Background:
What We Do:
The teen mothers and their children and their tutors will have supper together at the YWCA. Then the kids will go to the YWCA childcare and the teen mothers and tutors will head next door to the Central Branch of the Public Library. For the first hour, the teen mother and tutor will work on whatever the individual teen needs (homework help; researching or writing a paper; computer skills, job search, GED prep, college info); the second hour the group will come together to explore family literacy topics and books, songs, and games for their children
Tutor Qualities:
- Willing to be a part of a new adventure
- Excited to share your knowledge of reading, academic, and life skills and Strategies
- Open to learning from and with adolescent mothers ages 14-19 who may
- Be in school or trying to return to school
- Will make a weekly commitment
