Service Opportunities
Guilford College attracts many students interested in community issues and working for positive change in our society. More than 300 students make a weekly commitment in the wider community each semester through an internship, fieldwork associated with an academic class, or volunteer work. Guilford students, who serve as Project Coordinators, recruit, support and organize training for volunteers. Extensive training in the areas of anti-racism, conflict resolution, diversity, and feedback skills is provided so students can be equipped to make positive contributions to the community. Students are encouraged to reflect on their volunteer work for a more meaningful experience.

Guilford students perform thousands of hours of "community service" in the Greensboro area, and while we respect the notion of service on many levels, service can easily imply charity and "doing good" unto the poor and less privileged among us with services delivered at the convenience of the privileged. Therefore we prefer the term "community Learning" because it implies to us a dynamic partnership among all stakeholders involved, including the students, the nonprofit agencies and programs, the businesses and corporations and the community residents. Our students join the educational cycle that moves from personal concern, to problem identification and education, to action and reflection. We recognize our community partners as our teachers and co -- learners as we work together to respond to community needs.
