A.I.D.S Fellowship

A series of Guilford College students have led the effort to educate and inform their college-age peers about HIV and AIDS. Jack Register, Amanda Sabin and Mark Ferguson organized the first a.i.d.s. about A.I.D.S. Conference which has become a bi-annual event. Organized with the support and cooperation of Triad Health Project, a local HIV outreach program, the conferences offered participants form ten other colleges the opportunity to hear the voices of HIV infected people, caregivers, HIV/AIDS professionals as they worked together to understand this complex virus. Sloan Crawford '01 took up the cause for effective HIV/AIDS education on the Guilford College campus by organizing ongoing events on campus from 1997-2001 as well as a national conference for college students in 2000.

In honor of these dedicated student leaders and in recognition of the ongoing critical need for effective AIDS education to college students, Guilford College has created two AIDS Fellows positions. Dan Thigpen and Ashley Coleman served as out first official AIDS Fellows in 2001-02.

Program Summary

Two AIDS Fellows will be selected to serve during the 2005-2006 academic year. Upcoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply. Applicants will be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to community issues, ability to initiate and complete projects, and interest in the issues of AIDS education. The award is for one academic year only, but AIDS Fellows are eligible to re-apply.  (Bonner Scholars as not eligible to apply.)

AIDS Fellows will work 140 hours each semester on projects related to the issue of HIV/AIDS. At least 1/3 of those hours will be spent in work with a local not-for-profit in the wider Greensboro community working on HIV/AIDS issues. This might include such events as: free HIV-testing on campus; a week focused on HIV/AIDS-related events; overseeing the next conference; and opportunities for community service.

Each AIDS Fellow will receive a $4,000 fellowship.  $2,000 will be renamed Presidential, Achievement Awards or Incentive Grants and will be applied to the tuition. The remaining $2,000 will be from work-study funds and will be paid directly to the students in four checks of $500, two each semester.

AIDS Fellows will join our community learning leadership network by attending the Leadership Pre-mester held  and Avanti held in early August. They will work with the Director of Community Learning, the Volunteer Training Coordinator, and our student Project Coordinators throughout the academic year for ongoing training, support, and reflection.
