Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Hunger Fellowship
The Bonner Hunger Fellows program was created in December 1999 as a way to honor the ongoing work of Corella and Bertram Bonner and their commitment to helping meet the basic needs of nutrition and educational opportunity. Since its activation in 1989, the Foundation has become one of the nation's largest privately funded service scholarship programs and a philanthropic leader in the anti-hunger movement. The Bonner Foundation has awarded more than $12 million in scholarship to more than 2,500 students at 25 colleges including Guilford. The Bonner Foundation has funded scholarships for 80 Guilford students each year and has supported and encouraged our development of a strong campus-wide service program. Over the last seven years, the Bonner Foundation's Crisis Ministry Program has provided $10 million in grants to thousands of religious, community-based hunger relief programs across the country. The Bonner Hunger Fellows program will bring together the two interests of Corella and Bertram Bonner as college students organize to do anti-hunger work.
Program Summary: Two Bonner Hunger Fellows are selected for this Fellowship. Upcoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply. Applicants will be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to community issues, ability to initiate and complete projects, and interest in the issue of hunger. The award is for one academic year only, but Fellows are eligible to re-apply. Bonner Scholars are not eligible to apply.
Bonner Hunger Fellows will work 140 hours each semester on projects related to the issue of hunger in the wider Greensboro community. The Fellows will work as a team to plan opportunities that educate and involve the Guilford College campus in hunger issues.
Each Bonner Hunger Fellow will receive a $4,000 fellowship. $2,000 will be renamed Presidential or Achievement Awards and will be applied to the tuition. The remaining $2,000 will be from work study funds and will be paid directly to the students in four checks of $500, two each semester.
Bonner Hunger Fellows will join our community learning leadership network by attending the Leadership Pre-mester held in early August. They will work with the Volunteer Training Coordinator and our eighteen student Project Coordinators throughout the academic year for ongoing training, support, and reflection.
