Planning Your Career
A variety of resources are available to help you plan your career. To get started, register with the Career and Community Learning Center(CACL) and let us help you develop a plan that's right for you.
Hours: Monday through Friday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

The Career and Community Learning Center has services designed for both traditional and adult students. CCE students are encouraged to visit this CCE link.
Self Assessment - The first step in developing a career/life plan is identifying personal skills, values and interests. Meet with a career counselor to discuss which assessment tool is appropriate for your needs. You may also wish to explore any one of the available sites on the internet. Individual Career Counseling - Students are invited to schedule conferences to discuss general career concerns, choosing a major and relating it to potential careers, and ways to explore career interests, personality, and learning styles through assessment. CACL staff members also assist students with rough drafts to develop a polished resume. The Career Library houses graduate and professional schools reference materials, and video tapes on resume writing, interviewing, and job search skills, special resources for minorities and women, labor market information, directories of professional and business associations, literature on nonprofit and government agencies, profiles of major U.S. and international corporations, and listings of local, national, and international post-graduate internship and volunteer opportunities.
Graduate School Information - Electronic capability for graduate and professional school research is available in the Career Library. Several videotapes and a wide variety of books on choosing and financing graduate school and preparing your application and essays are also available. Students may obtain applications/information for graduate testing, including the MCAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, Praxis, and Foreign Service Exam in the CACL. Test preparation computer software and print materials are also available.
Computer Resources - The Career and Community Learning Library has several computers, a laser printer for producing polished resumes, and software that links students directly to World Wide Web career information (Microsoft Explorer) and to job listings (NACElink).
Free Literature and Publications - A wide variety of free career materials is available to all students, alumni and visitors. Be sure to visit our informational station that houses a large variety of brochures on career and life planning topics.
Presentations and Programs - The CACL sponsors presentations and programs with academic departments, student organizations, and alumni groups throughout the year. See our Calendar of Events for more information.
Career Planning: From College to Career (GS255) is offered each spring semester for one course credit.
The Alumni Network - The Alumni Network is an important resource for students who want to investigate careers through the "Guilford Connection." Students work closely with the Career and Community Learning staff to access valuable information from alumni volunteers.
Gaining Experience
Student Employment Services provides listings of part-time, summer and full-time jobs both on-line and in our office. You can access these opportunities with a valid G number by visiting Employment and Academic Opportunities. Call 336-316-2187 for more information.
Mock Interviews - Practice interviews may be arranged with members of the CACL staff and alumni volunteers at a student's request. Call 336-316-2187 to arrange an appointment.
The Alumni Network - Parent and alumni career volunteers are often willing to help students gain career experience through shadowings, externships, internships, summer and part-time jobs. Students work closely with CACL staff members to identify appropriate opportunities.
Internships - Internships, either paid or unpaid, for credit or not for credit, are often the key to obtaining satisfying employment after graduation. Internships and Community Learning coordinators will work with students to develop appropriate internship experiences leading to careers.
The Dorothy Lloyd Gilbert Awards for English Majors provide financial assistance to deserving English majors for career planning and preparation. The awards are intended to aid English majors in making the transition from student into a career built upon skills learned as an English major at
Obtaining Employment
Current Job Listings - The CACL receives local, regional, national, and international job notices and subscribes to newsletters listing jobs in business and industry, government, the arts, education, communications, sports and recreation, community service, natural and environmental sciences, nonprofit agencies, and more.
Computer Resources - The computers in the career library are connected to the World Wide Web. Students are encouraged to "surf" the Web for thousands of job listings in their fields of interest (see NACElink below) and to explore career-related "Bookmarks" highlighted by the CACL staff members. You may access these bookmarks through our Hot Links connection. Resume templates are available for downloading through CollegeGrad.com (click on link, choose "Resumes," then "Quickstart Resume Templates," choose your template and click on "I agree with terms," then click on "Select Your Personal Major," select your preferred file format, open it or save it to a disk). Make changes to the template to suit your needs, and you will have your first resume.
Career Fairs - Each fall semester, Guilford participates in a Career Fair with other colleges in the North Carolina Career Consortium. Students will be able to network with employers. Seniors and alumni may investigate actual job openings and discuss the possibility of a formal job interview at the afternoon Interview Session (seniors only) or for a later time (seniors and alumni). Undergraduate students may also talk to employers about careers, companies, summer and part-time jobs, or internship opportunities.
During spring semester Guilford hosts an Information Fair for Careers in Nonprofit. Organizations and agencies in social services, government, the arts, health care, administration of justice, youth advocacy, and environmental resources attend.
Also, Guilford students are often invited to attend job fairs sponsored by other colleges and organizations. Call 336-316-2187 for more information or check our Calendar of Events.
On-Campus Interviewing - Both corporate and nonprofit employers and school systems visit Guilford to interview seniors for employment after graduation. Seniors must be registered with the CACL to sign up for an interview time. Students are expected to abide by our policies governing on-campus interview procedures.
