Guilford to Hold Conference for Prospective Latino College Students Nov. 15

For the second year, Guilford will hold a conference for area Latino students interested in attending college. “Soy un Líder” (I am a Leader) will take place Saturday, Nov. 15, from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Alumni Gym on the Guilford campus.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Nolo Martinez, director for the Center for New North Carolinians at UNC Greensboro. The conference will include sessions on how to apply to college, how to prepare for college, where to find scholarships, what to expect of college life and more.

Students will be able to participate in an essay competition where the top four essays will receive a scholarship: $500 for first place, $350 for second, $250 for third and $100 for fourth.

The conference is free and open to Latino middle and high school students in Guilford, Forsyth and Alamance counties.

Guilford students organized the first Soy un Líder conference last fall with the goal of reaching out to area students – many of whom are first or second-generation immigrants – to let them know how that college is a realistic goal and how they can prepare for higher education. By some estimates, three-quarters of Latino students nationally don’t earn college degrees.
