Editorial Cartoonist Signe Wilkinson to Visit, Speak Nov. 16-17

Signe WilkinsonSigne Wilkinson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning and nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Daily News, will visit Guilford Nov. 16-17. Wilkinson, who is this year’s Judith Weller Harvey Quaker Scholar, will participate in a panel discussion and give a lecture Thursday, Nov. 16, and be featured speaker for the Guilford College Friends of the Library Annual Dinner Friday evening, Nov. 17.

An exhibition of Wilkinson's work will be showcased Nov. 7-Dec. 10 in Guilford College Art Gallery, located in Hege Library on campus. Wilkinson became the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1992, and is author of the 2005 collection One Nation Under Surveillance.

Allen Johnson, editorial page editor for the News & Record, and John Hammer, editor of the Rhinoceros Times, are scheduled to join Wilkinson for a panel discussion on the Danish cartoon controversy and subsequent fallout Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. in Guilford College Art Gallery. Later that evening (7 p.m.), she will give a lecture entitled “Drawn to Quakerism: Friendly Influence on the Artist's Craft” at New Garden Friends Meeting (801 New Garden Road, adjacent to campus).

On Friday, Nov. 17, Wilkinson will participate in a “Meet the Artist” reception from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Gallery, and will give a talk entitled “War, Peace, and Snakes on the Plane: A Cartoonist's Guide to Current Events” during the Friends of the Library Annual Dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Room of the Library. (There is an admission charge for the dinner event, with proceeds benefiting Friends of the Library projects.)
