Students, faculty, staff and members of the extended college community gathered at New Garden Friends Meeting to share information about activities held in response to the Jan. 20 Bryan Hall incident, to reflect on the impact the incident has had on the campus and to discuss ways in which the community will be restored.

The following timeline of activities includes programs organized by the college as well as programs organized by on- and off-campus groups in which members of the Guilford community have participated.

Timeline of Campus Response Activities

Saturday, January 20

  • Anti-racism Team of staff and students gathered and called meeting for Jan. 21.

Sunday, January 21

  • Meeting held between Anti-racism Team and Students of Color.

Monday, January 22

  • Students of Color Caucus meeting at the International House.  In attendance were Vice President Adrienne Israel and Dean Aaron Fetrow for the second half of the meeting.

Tuesday, January 23

  • Students meet with Aaron Fetrow prior to initial media conference to discuss concerns.
  • RAs (Residence Assistants) and Hall Directors began initial floor meetings and discussion, to continue in coming weeks.

Wednesday, January 24

  • Silent Meeting for Worship held, beginning at Founders Hall and proceeding to Dana Auditorium organized by Quaker Leadership Scholars Program.
  • President Kent Chabotar met with concerned students during open office hours.
  • Silent Meeting for Worship with attention to business for entire Guilford community at New Garden Friends Meeting.  Facilitated by the Conflict Resolution Resource Center (CRRC).
  • Community Senate met and discussed the incident.

Thursday, January 25

  • Some students staged “Stop Hate” walkout from classes.
  • Students of Color Caucus met with Kent Chabotar to discuss the Jan. 20 incident.  “Students for Justice” and members of the Guilford community were also in attendance.  Proposals were presented and received regarding changes to the Student Code of Conduct and the student judicial process.
  • Student-athlete Caucus met.

Friday, January 26

  • Students of Color Caucus met with Vice Presidents Randy Doss '82 and Adrienne Israel.  Students voiced concerns regarding safety on campus and possible changes to the student judicial process.

Saturday, January 27

  •  Student-athlete Bible Study convened to discuss scripture and gather in prayer.

Monday, January 29

  • Forum held by Student-athlete Advisory Council, open to all students, facilitated by the CRRC.

Wednesday, January 31

  • Student panel held, discussing next steps (various student constituencies represented on panel).

Sunday, February 4

  • White Caucus-White Allies meeting held to help students and others understand what white people can do to help people of color.

Tuesday, February 6

  • Community Senate met and discussed student-athlete/non-athlete divide.

Wednesday, February 7

  • Meeting organized by Truth and Reconciliation Project held at Genesis Baptist Church.

Sunday, February 18 (tentative)

  • Teach-in series organized by Campus Ministry, CRRC, and Alumni Relations begins.
  • Teach-in presenters (either on Feb. 18 or a future date) may include:
    • President Emeritus William Rogers, Herb Appenzeller, James Shields '00, Bob Malekoff, Kathryn Schmidt and Gwen Erickson.
  • Other possible presenters include:
    • Vernon Tyson '53, Timothy Tyson, Calvin Hunter '92, and M.L. Carr '73.

Ongoing

  • Art Department and community project using art for reflection.
  • In-class discussions across many departments on campus.
  • Meetings for worship.
