Discussion, Film Screening to Explore Impact of Environmental Problems on Community

Two events will consider the intersection of environmental degradation, community and social justice.

On Monday, April 20, Father John Rausch will give a presentation in Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium at 7 p.m. Rausch, who coordinates the Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese of Lexington, Ky., will talk about the inter-relatedness of race, class and the environment, followed by discussion. For more than 30 years he has advocated for the people and land of Appalachia, working to promote social justice and to end environmental degradation, including the devastating effects of mountain top removal coal mining.

Next, the documentary film The Drilling Fields will be screened Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in King Hall Room 126. The film reveals the environmental destruction and human costs of the petroleum industry in Nigeria. It follows the alarming events that occurred in Nigeria in 1993 after the Ogoni people attempted to protect and defend their lands against multinational oil corporations and Nigeria's military government. The film is 50 minutes long and will be followed by an update and discussion.

The discussion and film screening are co-sponsored by the Center for Principled Problem Solving and the Department of Sociology, with other campus organizations. For more information, call 316-2853.
