Multicultural Education Center Events to Study “N-Word”
The Multicultural Education Department is sponsoring two events this week exploring the origins and meanings of racist language.
An Africana Brown Bag Discussion entitled “The N-Word: What do You Think?” will take place Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 12-1 p.m. in the Multicultural Education Center (King Hall 128E). The session will be facilitated by community activist Terrence “TC” Muhammad.
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Eddie Moore will present “The N-Word: Is There a Message in The Madness?” at 7 p.m. in Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium, located in the Frank Family Science Center. Moore is the director of diversity at the The Bush School in Seattle, Wash.
The session will look at the history of the “N” word utilizing Randall Kennedy’s popular and controversial book along with TV shows, film clips and a documentary film about a recovered white supremacist, and examine how current events, media, popular music and movies have used the word over the years. Participants will be challenged to explore their personal histories to this word and discuss the implications of its usage.
Both events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Multicultural Education Center at mrc@guilford.edu or 316-2433.
