Student Newspaper Named Best in Show

A national scholastic press competition has named Guilford College’s student-run newspaper, The Guilfordian, one of the country’s best college newspapers.

The Guilfordian won Best in Show in the category of weekly tabloids at four-year colleges at the 87th Annual American Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers National College Media Convention, held Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in Kansas City, Mo.

In that category, Guilford finished ahead of newspapers from the University of North Florida, York University (Ontario), Elon University and the University of Vermont.

The Guilfordian staff was surprised to beat out colleges with larger student populations and more generous budgets, said editor Ben Dedman ’09.

This was the first year Guilford entered the ACP/CMA competition. The Guilfordian had previously shared first place in the American Scholastic Press Association competition for four straight years, last year winning first place with distinction.

Also at the convention, Jeff Jeske, Dana Professor of English and faculty adviser to The Guilfordian, presented a session entitled "First Things First: Recruiting--and Then Retaining--a Dynamic Staff for the College Weekly."

The Guilfordian publishes every Friday during the school year, and may be read online at www.guilfordian.com.
