Approximately 450 to Receive Degrees During 170th Commencement May 5

Guilford will confer degrees on approximately 450 graduates during its 170th commencement exercises Saturday, May 5, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The program will be held in the Ragan Brown Field House due to a forecast of rain.
Tickets are now needed for entrance to graduation, due to limited seating, and students will be able to pick up six tickets each. Students who did not pick up tickets at commencement rehearsal may pick them up from 5-7 p.m. on Friday in the Dana Auditorium lobby. Anyone not possessing a ticket can view the ceremony from the Alumni Gym.
President Kent Chabotar will preside over his fifth commencement and Martin Eakes, a trustee since 2004 and the founder and chief executive officer of Durham, N.C.-based Self-Help, will be the invited speaker.
Eakes is the founder of one of the nation's leading community development lenders that has provided more than $3.9 billion in financing to 43,000 home buyers, small businesses and nonprofits. Self-Help's focus is to help underserved clients, particularly minorities, women and low-income individuals, achieve economic self-sufficiency.
Also participating in the commencement exercises will be Adrienne Israel, vice president and academic dean.
The college choir, under the direction of Wendy Looker, will perform,bagpipers will lead the graduates in a processional and Quaker Brass, a faculty and student musical group, will perform prior to and during the exercises.
The college will hold a baccalaureate service for graduates, their families and friends Friday, May 4 at 6 p.m. in Dana Auditorium.

Founded in 1837, Guilford is among the oldest co-educational institutions of higher education nationally. Approximately 2,700 students were enrolled this academic year, including traditional-age, adult and Early College students.
