New Documentary Film Straightlaced to Premiere Feb. 19 at Guilford
Guilford will host the North Carolina premiere of the new documentary Straightlaced: How Gender’s Got Us All Tied Up and a conversation with its director, Academy Award winner Debra Chasnoff, on Thursday, Feb 19, at 7 p.m. in Dana Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Straightlaced opens a much-needed dialogue about gender roles and homophobia among teenagers, depicting a diverse group of students who open up about the pressure to conform to rigid gender role expectations. From girls confronting popular messages about culture and body image to boys who are sexually active just to prove they aren't gay, the students in Straightlaced illustrate the toll that deeply held stereotypes and rigid gender policing have on all of our lives.
Chasnoff, the winner of the 1992 Academy Award for Best Documentary, Short Subjects, has directed acclaimed several feature documentary films, including That’s a Family (2000) and It’s Elementary: Talking About Gay Issues in School (1996). She is a the executive director of the production company GroundSpark and co-creator of The Respect For All Project, a program that produces media and training resources to help prevent prejudice among young people.
The film screening will be followed by a question-and-answer period with Chasnoff and reception in the Dana Auditorium Lobby. For additional information, call 316-2128.
The screening of Straightlaced is co-sponsored by the departments of education and multicultural education at Guilford College, Equality NC and PFLAG Greensboro, along with several other educational and community organizations.
