Shore Hall Solar Hot Water Project Dedication Rescheduled for April 25

Solar InstallThe Shore Hall solar hot water project dedication ceremony has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 25, at 1:30 p.m. The postponement was necessitated by rainy weather on April 11.

The ceremony will celebrate the installation of 12 solar panels on the roof of Shore Hall. The new solar panels will generate enough power to heat all the water in the residence hall; in effect, eliminating the cost of heating while reducing energy consumption. Implemented by the Sustainability Council, the Shore Hall solar hot water project is indicative of the college’s ongoing commitment to create an environmentally sustainable campus.

The Shore Hall project was funded by the first in a series of $50,000 annual commitments to sustainability projects by President Kent Chabotar. The solar panels were installed over two weeks in February and cost $30,000. The remaining funds this year were spent on recycling containers that were placed across campus and 15 waterless urinals.

The dedication ceremony will be an opportunity to learn more about sustainability efforts both on the Guilford campus and beyond. Representatives from FLS Energy of Black Mountain, N.C., will be on site to explain the workings of the new solar hot water system and answer questions. Jon Varnell, associate vice president of operations and facilities, will share news about how Guilford is going green, including the future Archdale Hall project. Kyle Dell and Angela Moore, co-heads of the Environmental Studies Department, will speak about how the efforts of operations and facilities intersect with the work of the academic program.

The dedication will include a working model of the water system to show how it functions, a presentation on the progress of the construction, a short discussion about sustainability, as well as a performance by the band One String Over (powered by a solar energy generator).
