Religious Emphasis Week Begins Jan. 23

Friends Center at Guilford College will welcome a pair of anti-violence advocates and a New Monastic author as part of the 19th annual Religious Emphasis Week, which runs from Jan. 23-31.

Cuban-born Quaker Eduardo Diaz (a 1973 Guilford graduate) and his wife Clara Diaz will lead the college’s weekly meeting for worship on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. in the Moon Room, located in Dana Auditorium. They will also present “The Never-Ending Search for Truth” on Monday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guilford College Community Center.

Eduardo Diaz is the executive director of the Miami-Dade Independent Review Panel, former president of the National Association of Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement and newly elected president of the Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict and Violence. Clara Diaz, a public school teacher, has joined her husband in leading alternatives-to-violence workshops in prisons since 1994.

Also on Monday, Jan. 26, special guest Shane Claiborne will speak from 2-4:30 p.m. in Boren Lounge, located in Founders Hall. Claiborne is a founder of Philadelphia’s Simple Way Community, part of the New Monastic Movement. A prominent activist for peace and the poor, Claiborne is the author of The Irresistible Revolution and Jesus for President (with Chris Haws).
